Beijing Trip Report – Grand Hyatt Beijing
I took the Airport Express train into Beijing and then took the subway to the Grand Hyatt Beijing. After exiting the station, it was confusing as to where I needed to go to find the hotel because the subway exited in the mall; however, the mall did not have signs pointing to the hotel even though it was attached to it. So I ended up walking around a lot before I finally found an exit and then located the hotel.
I booked the hotel for 780 RNB or approximately $120 USD.
Once I located the hotel, I was greeted by a doorman who held the door open and invited me to enter.
The hotel is in an office and shopping center complex. There was a water fountain outside the main entrance to the hotel.
The lobby consisted of two separate seating areas including one for a bar/restaurant. The reception desk was located to the left on the main entrance. There were also a few shops within the lobby.
I approached the reception desk and found three colleagues present and one colleague was stationed in the lobby greeting guests and directing them. There were two other guests present when I arrived. The attendant in the lobby greeted me warmly and he welcomed me to the hotel and he invited me to the desk where a female colleague welcomed me and offered assistance.
After I requested to check in, the colleague thanked me and she asked for my identification card. After I provided it she used my name and she confirmed the details of the reservation. The colleague thanked me for my Diamond Status and loyalty to Hyatt and she informed me that the room was upgraded to the Club Floor. She also informed me that I would get breakfast in the morning either in the restaurant on the second floor or in the club lounge. The colleague copied my passport and visa. The registration process was lengthy and I stood waiting at the desk while she was entering information in the computer. It appeared that she needed to use two different terminals during the registration which further delayed the process. The agent printed a registration card and she asked me to confirm the details on it and sign it. After I signed it, the colleague thanked me and she asked for a credit card to process the registration. I provided it and she processed the payment before returning the card and providing the keys in a key packet. The colleague informed me where the elevators were located and she asked me to enjoy my stay.
I located the elevators and once inside I was required to use my key to access my floor.
I was assigned a room on the 16th floor of the hotel. Once I arrived on the floor I followed the signs to the room.
My room was 1661 which was a king size bed room with a seating area. I used the key to access the door and it opened without issue.
When I opened the door I discovered a large room with a work desk, seating area with couch and table as well as a king size bed and a television that could be turned to either watch in the room or watch at the bed.
A dresser was present offering plenty of storage space.
The room offered a view of an office building.
A welcome amenity was provided in the room which was a fruit plate containing pears, apples and oranges. There was also a welcome note that was not personalized. The fruit was fresh and sweet and it had a good taste.
A large closet was present in the entryway to the room. The closet offered plenty of storage space.
The bathroom was large and it featured a large bath tub as well as a shower. The bathroom was clean and the linens were presented neatly. The bath amenities were in good condition.
The room was clean and quiet throughout the stay.
The heating controls adjusted the temperature in the room to a comfortable level.
Universal power outlets were found in the room as well as USB ports at the desk.
The desk offered a lot of space to work; however, the chair utilized at the desk was not very comfortable and it made working on the computer to be slightly uncomfortable due to the angle. It would have been nicer if a computer chair was provided instead of the leather chair.
I accessed the Wifi and the connection was fast. I was able to connect to a VPN so I could access US webpages. There was a sign next to the phone that listed common sites that were not accessible in China. I was able to access them when I had the VPN on though.
The bed was soft and comfortable and I got a good night’s rest.
I visited the Grand Club for the evening reception.
The club is located on the floor 17 of the hotel. When I arrived I was immediately greeted by a colleague that smiled, made eye contact with me and welcomed me to the lounge. The colleague offered to seat me and she asked how many were in my party. I said one and she escorted me to a table.
The colleague presented a small menu for hot food and she informed me that I could help myself from the buffet as well as the drinks. The colleague asked for my room number. After I provided it she thanked me and asked me to enjoy my evening.
The lounge had a decorative staircase that leads down from floor 18.
Once inside the lounge it is a large room with windows on one side. There were tables and chairs setup throughout the lounge. The area was clean and the tables and chairs were in good condition.
Colleagues were circulating the room to remove the dishes and clean as guests finished their food and drinks.
The buffet was setup in the middle of the room. There were both hot and cold options. The hot options included various dim sum as well as a pumpkin soup. The cold options included salad, bread, cheese, meat, crackers, mini prepared salads and fruit. There was also a dessert station available as well with a variety of cookies, fruit and pastries.
A large bar was available with a good mix of various alcohol that you could mix yourself. In addition, the hotel had three different red wine options and three different white wine options. In addition, Champaign was also available. There were about five beer options as well in addition to various juices, soda and other mixers.
The food stations were setup neatly and all the food was signed. There were clean utensils to serve each other and there was also clean flatware and chopsticks. The dishes were in good condition.
The hotel offered three hot items that you could order from the menu. They included a quiche, pork pot stickers and a pasta option. The menu at the table said to ask a server for the item.
There were servers circulating the lounge; however, they were not proactive in offering to take guests order. I did observe some of the servers offering to bring guests additional beverages as well.
From the buffet I selected dim sum and a salad. There were three dressing options. I choose a tangy Asian flavored one.
I also sampled two different types of white wine.
The dim sum included a duck dish served inside a pepper. The duck was seasoned well and it had a good taste and flavor. I also had small egg rolls which were also good. Both of the items were served warm and they had a good taste. The salad was served chilled and it was fresh and it had a good taste.
While I was dining at my table a server walked by me. I asked her if it would be possible to order. She said yes and asked what I wanted. I requested the pot stickers. The server asked if I wanted two or four. I requested four and she thanked me and said it would be ready shortly.
Within about five minutes, the server returned and she presented the pot stickers on a clean plate with a tangy sauce on the side.
The pot stickers were served hot. They were freshly prepared and they were stuffed with pork and vegetables. The flavor was excellent and they were presented attractively.
The server removed my used dish after I finished it and she offered additional wine. I declined and she thanked me.
When I was ready to depart, the colleague near the front entrance used my name and she thanked me sincerely and wished me a good evening. I was surprised she remembered my name after I only gave her my room number and did not have any other interaction with her during the visit.
I went to the restaurant on the second floor for breakfast in the morning. When I arrived there was one colleague near the host stand and zero other guests were waiting. The colleague greeted me and welcomed me. The colleague asked for my room number and after I did she thanked me and checked a list for guests with breakfast included. Once she verified that I get breakfast she invited me to a table and when we arrived at the table she assisted me with seating. The colleague also offered to bring me coffee or tea. I requested a cappuccino and she thanked me and said she would be right back.
Within two minutes, the colleague returned to my table and she presented the cappuccino and she invited me to help myself to the buffet.
The restaurant was large and it had seating throughout the area including rooms that have a view of outside. My seat was located along the balcony overlooking the lobby. The tables and chairs were clean and neat and the area was in good condition.
The buffet offered multiple stations with a variety of Asian and Western options. Some were hot and some were chilled out at room temperature. There were also stations with made to order items.
The hot items included a variety of Asian choices including soups, noodles, wontons, egg rolls, pot stickers and other dim sum. There were also made to order noodle dishes by a colleague.
The hot Western items included eggs, sausage, potatoes and vegetables. A made to order station was provided for egg dishes as well as pancakes and waffles.
The cold items included fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, sushi, salad, breads, pastries, cheese, meats as well. In addition, there was a station with a variety of juice options including fresh squeezed juice.
Some of the dishes on the buffet were signed, while others were not signed.
The buffet area was clean and the dishes were filled. Colleagues were circulating the the buffet area to keep the dishes stocked.
I selected some rice, pot stickers, dim sum and vegetables from the buffet. In addition, I had a glass of orange juice.
The food was served hot. The rice was cooked fresh and it was fried and had a good seasoning level. The dim sum was also hot and it had an excellent taste and flavor. The vegetables were fresh; however, the corn was dry and it tasted slightly over cooked.
The orange juice was fresh squeezed and it had an excellent taste. The cappuccino was rich and creamy and it had a bold espresso taste.
A colleague approached my table and offered to remove my used glass after I finished the cappuccino. The colleague also offered an additional coffee. I accepted and she provided it within a few minutes.
The dining room was moderately filled at the time. The other guests were being greeted similar to I was and the colleagues were all friendly and polite.
When I was ready to depart the restaurant, the colleague at the entrance area greeted me and she thanked me and asked me to have a good day.
After breakfast I visited the pool area and the fitness center. The pool was in an Oasis that had a tropical theme. When I arrived a colleague at the check in desk greeted me and asked if I was a member. I provided my room number and she thanked me and invited me to enter the pool area.
When I entered I found a large room that was indoors with a variety of tropical plants including palm trees. Sounds were playing as if it was in a tropical setting with birds and other animals. The air was fresh and the temperature was warm to match the theme. The pool was clean and towels were available as well as a variety of chairs. The chairs were arranged neatly and towels were rolled on them.
The fitness center was large and it was located adjacent to the pool. The fitness center was cool and music was playing in the background at an upbeat level. A variety of machines were available including both cardio and weight equipment. The machines were all functioning and the area was clean.
When I was ready to depart the hotel, I approached the front desk. There were three colleagues present and one other guest was being assisted. When I reached the front of the line a colleague invited me to the desk. The colleague greeted me and offered assistance. After I requested to check out, the colleague asked for my room number. After I provided it and returned the keys, she used my name and she inquired about my stay. I said it was good and the colleague thanked me. The colleague reviewed the charges and offered to settle them. I accepted and the colleague asked if I wanted to use the same card that I checked in with. I said yes and she thanked me. The colleague printed a receipt and she folded it an placed it in an envelope The colleague thanked me for staying at the hotel and she invited me to return. The colleague offered additional assistance. After I declined, she thanked me and wished me a good day.
I departed the hotel by foot and walked to the train station. My departure was further acknowledged by another colleague as I was departing the hotel.
Summary –
I enjoyed my stay at the Grand Hyatt Beijing. I felt that the colleagues that I interacted with were polite and they made me feel welcome. I did think that the check in process was a little lengthy. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. The Grand Club lounge was excellent and I was surprised with all the food and drink options. I would return in the future to the hotel.
