The world’s largest cruise ship is officially named Icon of the Seas on January 23, 2024 in a special ceremony in Miami.
In a fitting way, Messi, a famous soccer star used a soccer ball to press the button that released the champaign bottle to break on the ship to officially name it.
It was an exciting moment for Royal Caribbean and the cruise industry.
Following the official naming, a beautiful fireworks display was made over the ship in the Port of Miami.
Naming Ceremony
A naming ceremony is a traditional ceremony held on a ship to formally name it and bring good luck. It traditionally involves having a Godparent of the ship who will break a bottle of champaign over the ship to bless it.
The ceremonies include lots of special guests from media, travel agents and staff of the cruise line.
For Royal Caribbean, they went all out with having a world famous soccer icon, Messi as the Godfather.
Mario Lopez hosted the event and it included special performances by the entertainers onboard the ship as well as local dignitaries.
The naming ceremony took place in Aquadome, a unique water theater onboard the ship.

Soccer Team
Royal Caribbean is now the official soccer jersey sponsor of the Miami CF soccer team and they had all the players attend the naming ceremony along with Messi.
The Royal Caribbean logo is on the front of the jersey’s for the team.
Royal Caribbean signed a multi year partnership with the team which brings the Crown and Anchor logo front and center on the jerseys as well as in the stadium and in promotions.
It will be an iconic partnership and what better time then now to officially launch it with Messi as the Godfather of Icon of the Seas.

Iconic Ship
The Icon of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship coming in at about 250,000 gross tons. The ship will carry up to 7,600 passengers in the Caribbean.
The ship has been offering special media and travel agent previews over the past month.
On January 27, 2024, paying guests will have their first opportunity to experience the ship when she sails to the Eastern Caribbean with visits to St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and Perfect Day at Coco Cay.
The ship will offer alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings from Miami.
