Weekend Mileage Run Trip Report – Sightseeing in San Francisco

Due to the unexpected time that I had in San Francisco due to the cancelled New York flights, I spent the day on Sunday walking around and exploring the city.

I departed the hotel in the morning and I walked down to Market Street and then followed that down to the Embarcado Area of the city.

The entire area was blocked off as preparations were underway to build the Super Bowl City for the upcoming game. A stage was being built as well as other attractions. Most of the area was closed off and security guards were present in order to keeping guests out of the area as it was being built.

I managed to walk around the area and then walked down to the Bay Bridge. I took a few pictures along the way as it was a great morning.

A statue and a park area was found near the base of the bridge.

After visiting the bridge area, I proceeded to walk along the piers and made my way to the Fisherman’s Wharf area.

There were two cruise ships in port that day I I was able to walk near them. Both of the ships were smaller luxury cruise liners. It was still early so there was limited activity near the ports.

I continued my walk and stopped near the docks for Alcatraz Tours. It was a clear day so there was a good view of the island.

Next I came up to Pier 37 and walked along and watched some of the boats that were docked in the area.

I made a stop near the Sea Lion area and watched several of the animals playing and splashing each other and jumping in and out of the water. There were a lot of sea lions present that day and most of them were sleeping on the docks.

I continued exploring and entered the Fisherman’s Wharf area where I saw some of the fish vendors selling crab and other selections to customers walking by.

I walked into the North Beach area and saw the In N Out Burgers. The location appeared remodeled and it had more space than on a previous visit. It was still early in the day so I did not have a Double Double that day. Hopefully on my next trip to the West Coast I will have a chance to have one again as they are quite tasty.

From the North Beach area, I made my way over to Little Italy. I saw some of the street cafes as well as some of the Italian cheese and meat markets. The area was not as busy as it had been on previous visits to the city so I was easily able to walk by the stores and look inside.

I continued walking and entered China Town.

China Town was crowded with people shopping in the markets as well as the gift shops.

I walked around in the area and did a little shopping for some gifts.

In addition, I stopped and had some appetizers at one of the Dim Sum restaurants and got a smoothie at another store.

I visited a Fortune Cookie factory that is tucked away in an alley. The store was small and it had the option of being able to write your own fortunes and they would put them inside the cookies for you. That was a unique experience. I wrote two and paid and the attendant rolled the cookie for me and put the fortune inside. The process was quick and the fortune cookies were placed in a small take-out style box.

I continued walking around China Town for a few minutes before returning to the Market Street area as well as my hotel.

It was a beautiful day in San Francisco and I was able to take a few pictures from the hotel overlooking the water and the Ferry building.

My trip to San Francisco was unexpected but it was a nice having the opportunity to walk around.

My wife and I will be returning to the area in a couple months so it will nice to get to show her around in the city as it will be her first time in the city. We plan to spend a day or two in wine country before spending some time in the city.

Some of my favorite SF things to do – walking/biking across the Golden Gate Bridge, the 76x bus to the Marin Headlands (bus stop 1 block from the Grand Hyatt), Sausalito or Larkspur ferry. The views from each of those is spectacular.

I am going to SFO again soon. I will have to check out those options. I’ve seen those ferry destinations from the Embarcado area. Is that where you took the ferry from?
