Sunset Sail on an AdventureCat Catamaran
This article is about my Sunset Sail on an AdventureCat Catamaran in San Francisco. This article reviews my experience on the sunset sailing in the San Francisco Bay.
The article is part of my San Francisco Foodie Adventure Trip.
AdventureCat
AdventureCat is a company that operates two catamarans in the San Francisco Bay. The company offers several tours each day where you get to go out on the water in a catamaran.
The company offers daytime cruises where you get to see Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline.
In addition, the company provides a sunset sail each evening that combines fantastic sunset views behind the Golden Gate Bridge along with incredible views of the city.
The Sunset Sail is available for $60 per-person and it includes two drinks per person as well as appetizers. You can book the Sunset Sail here.
The daytime sails are $45.
Location
AdventureCat operates two catamarans from Pier 39 in San Francisco from the J docks. The docks are located right next to where the sea lions hang out.
It is easy to locate as you follow the sound of the sea lions and then look for docks J.
Passengers are invited to line up 30 minutes before outside the entrance to dock J.
Adventurecat boards the catamaran about 10 minutes before each sail so be sure to arrive early.
Arrival
My wife and I arrived for our Sunset Sail on an AdventureCat Catamaran about 30 minutes before the departure time.
Other guests were already waiting in front.
We spend a few minutes walking around Pier 39 and admired the sea lions before proceeding to the waiting area when a staff member arrived.
When we arrived at the dock entrance, the staff member greeted us warmly, introduced himself and asked for our name. The staff member welcomed us and he checked us in for the sail. The staff member informed us that we would be boarding in a few minutes.
About 10 minutes before the scheduled sailing time, the staff members invited guests to board and lined up and made our way out to the catamaran.
Another staff member was standing outside the ship. The staff member greeted us and asked for our name. After we provided it, he thanked us and welcomed us on board.
The passengers were invited to sit around on the deck in the catamaran or to go inside and sit at the tables and chairs.
The staff members announced that the front of the catamaran on each corner might get wet from the waves when we were cruising out onto the bay.
The staff members informed guests that warm coats were available for use during the sailing if guests got cold.
The staff members also provided safety instructions for the tour and discussed the life jackets before the tour began.
The staff member told guests that once the catamaran was out in the bay and the sails were raised, that the bar opened and each guest could order two drinks.
Tour
The tour departed at 5:35 PM which was within a few minutes of the scheduled time.
The passengers were welcomed and asked to enjoy the cruise.
The catamaran exited the dock area and the staff members raised the sails.
An announcement was made about the bar being opened. The staff members also said that if guests wanted more than two drinks each, they could purchase them.
The catamaran sailed out into the bay and we were given an excellent perspective on the city as we moved away towards the Golden Gate Bridge.
Before arriving at the Golden Gate Bridge, Sunset Sail on an AdventureCat Catamaran was driven near Alcatraz, where guests could take pictures before the cruise went around the island.
The views of Alcatraz were amazing with the sun going down in the background.
The tour continued towards the Golden Gate Bridge. The captain stopped the catamaran several times so guests could walk around and take pictures and take in the views of the bridge.
The wildfires in California provided smoke/hazy background which marked the sky look unique as the sun began to set.
The tour continued and drove under the Golden Gate bridge for more views.
After going under the bridge, the Captain drove the tour a little way out so we could see the rock formations and continue to watch the sun set.
The Captain took the catamaran back under the bridge and then stopped in an ideal location for picture taking as the sun went down.
The staff members on the catamaran were friendly and they were walking around engaging guests in conversation as well as they offered to take pictures for guests.
The views were incredible as the sun went down.
We visited the bar and noted that there were a couple beer options, wine, soda and water available for guests.
We enjoyed a beer and wine and found them to be excellent.
A buffet was setup with snacks; however, my wife and I were not hungry at that point so we did not sample them.
Conclusion of Tour
After the sun went down for our Sunset sail on AdventureCat Catamaran, the Captain began the short journey back to the dock.
The catamaran returned to port and we could watch the sea lions hanging out on the platform as we made our way back to the dock.
Upon arrival at the dock, the Captain thanked the guests for sailing and he provided some concluding announcements including a reminder for passengers to return the borrowed jackets and to be sure that guests checked the pockets on the jackets for personal belongings.
The Captain thanked guests and wished them a good evening.
Two of the staff members thanked my wife and I as were departing the catamaran. The staff were friendly and polite and they invited us back for a future cruise.
Overall
My wife and I enjoyed our Sunset Sail on an AdventureCat Catamaran. We felt that the staff were friendly. It was a nice touch that they introduced themselves personally to us and made conversation with us during the tour. The views on the tour were incredible and the Captain provided multiple opportunities to capture great pictures. We would return in the future on one of the cruises.
