TSA PreCheck Expanded Four New Airlines

TSA PreCheck is a great program that allows for reduced time getting through the security lines at airports. It is an expedited process where you are able to keep your shoes on, computer and ziplock bag with liquids within your bag.

There is an application process and you are required to go through an interview with a TSA rep. Once that is complete, you are able to use the expedited line on most flights. There is a chance that you will get a random additional screen, but generally the process is efficient.

I have access to TSA PreCheck because of my Global Entry access. Global Entry allows for expedited entry into the US and it has a more lengthy application and background check process. The access is provided for five years and is relatively inexpensive ($100) when you factor in the number of years that you get the access.

TSA recently announced that they are now expanding the program to include the following four additional airlines:

1. Aeromexico
2. Cape Air
3. Etihad
4. Seaborne Airlines

Every time additional airlines are added is a good thing. It is annoying when you have the access but your airline does not offer the program and you end up having to stand in the long line.

TSA has been in the news because of the long lines that happened during Spring Break and they are expected to get worse this summer as more and more families are traveling. In my personal experience at Minneapolis St Paul Airport (MSP), the regular lines have been between one to two hours. TSA PreCheck has reduced the time to between 15-30 minutes at the busiest times. On a typically travel day though, I generally make it through between 5-15 minutes so it is a great addition.

How do you get TSA PreCheck?

You need to do the following things:

1. Sign up here
2. Schedule an interview at a TSA Enrollment Center
3. Attend the interview and do the following things:
   1. Bring the required documentation
   2. Get fingerprinted
   3. Pay the enrollment fee – $85

Once you are approved you are given a Known Traveler Number. Enter this with your airline in your frequent flier profile or when you make a reservation. Make sure that the name used on the ticket matches exactly with how you registered with PreCheck.

When you check in, your boarding pass should show TSA PreCheck which will allow you to use the expedited lanes.

Ways to Save

There are several credit cards currently available that reimburse you once per-five years for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry so you may be able to get the access for free. Check with your credit card company to see if they offer it. Even if they don’t, it is a great value as TSA PreCheck is only $85 for five years or $17 a year which can save you a ton of time!
