Holiday Inn Express Duluth North

I recently attended a conference in Duluth, Minnesota and I had the opportunity to stay at the Holiday Inn Express Duluth North.

The Holiday Inn Express Duluth North is located about 15-20 minutes from Canal Park in Duluth.

The hotel was recently built and it is in the new Holiday Inn Express style similar to the one that I toured in Roseville, Minnesota.

Reservation Details

The reservation was made via my company and was direct billed at a rate of around $100 per-night.

Location

The hotel is on a major highway just to the north of Duluth, Minnesota in Hermantown. The area is near a lot of shopping including the Simon Mall, Walmart, Target as well as a number of other businesses. It is also located near the Duluth Airport. The Duluth airport is shared with the Air Force Reserve and you can frequently hear the fighter jets taking off and flying in the area. Unfortunately, I was unable to see any of the planes.

Check In

The check in process took a few minutes as there were several other guests that arrived at the same time and only one team member was present.

After I waited about 10 minutes, I reached the front of the line and the team member welcomed me and she processed my checkin efficiently.

The agent acknowledged my IGH membership and she thanked me for my loyalty.

The colleague pointed out the breakfast times and the breakfast area.

The agent issued a key card and wished me a good day.

Public Areas

The hotel features an open sitting area in the lobby which is attached to the breakfast area.

A variety of chairs, tables and other seating was available in the lobby.

A coffee station was available throughout the stay.

The hotel also featured a large fitness center.

The fitness center offered treadmills and elliptical machines.

There were also free weights and other weight equipment available.

The fitness center offered clean towels, water and headphones as well as reading material.

The fitness center was in good condition.

The hotel also featured an indoor pool. There were always people using it so I did not end up taking any photos. The pool was clean and in good condition.

On each hallway of the guest room areas there were a large sigh indicating the floor you were on.

It is a neat design so you know exactly what floor you are on as soon as you exit the elevators.

Guest Room

I was assigned room 402, which was a king size bed room.

The door featured the type of lock that allows for access via your mobile phone. The hotel was not participating in the program though so I used the standard key card to open the door.

Once inside the room, it had a clean scent and was large.

The room featured a small seating area.

There was also a desk and dresser area with the television.

The room offered an entry way hallway with some additional storage available.

A nook featured the coffee setup with a single serve k-cup machine as well as a microwave and refrigerator.

Four coffee k-cups were provided.

I stayed two nights and additional k-cups were not provided during the stay even though I used two of them.

The bed was a king size bed with plenty of power ports near it as well as lighting.

The bathroom was large and it was in good condition.

A shower was provided with a good shower head which was located over six feet up so I did not have to duck while using the shower.

The amenities were setup in the bathroom and they included small containers of Bath and Body Works products.

No bottles of water were provided in the room.

The room offered a view of the parking lot with some of the hills of Duluth in the background.

Room Comfort

The room was clean and comfortable. The room was also relatively quiet throughout the stay. You could occasionally hear talking while guests were in the hallway but the room was otherwise quiet.

The linens were clean. The bed was comfortable and I was able to sleep well.

I did not utilize the television during the stay, however, there were a variety of channels listed in the guide.

The linens in the bathroom were also clean; although they were rather thin.

The room was cleaned during the stay lightly. The bed was made and the trash was removed. The amenities were not refreshed.

Breakfast

The hotel offers breakfast daily and it is served from a area attached to the lobby.

The breakfast setup features a pancake machine!

The machine is similar to the one utilized by Alaska Air in the Boardrooms. I wrote about that when I visited the club in Los Angeles.

In addition to the pancakes, the hotel offered eggs and sausage and hot cinnamon rolls as hot food options.

Cereal was available along with milk and yogurt.

The hotel served bread, bagels and muffins as well as pastries.

A juice machine was located next to the pancake machine.

Near the breakfast area, there were several tables and chairs and other seating options where you could enjoy your breakfast.

For breakfast I selected eggs, sausage and a cinnamon roll.

The food was served hot. The eggs were fresh and the sausage had a good flavor. The cinnamon roll was sweet and it was also warm and it had a good taste.

Check Out

When I was ready to depart the hotel, the team member at the desk greeted me warmly and inquired about my stay. The agent reviewed the charges and confirmed that they were direct billed. The agent offered a receipt showing I had a zero balance. I accepted and she provided it. The agent thanked me for staying at the hotel and she invited me to return in the future.

Overall

I enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn Express Duluth. The hotel was clean and modern. The room was comfortable and I got a good nights sleep. The only draw back is the location. It is about a 20-minute drive to Canal Park. The hotel is a lot more modern than the options within Canal Park; however, the distance is a bit annoying.
