Philadelphia Trip Report – Sightseeing in Philadelphia
I traveled to Philadelphia in order to visit my sister. On the morning after I arrived, my sister and her boyfriend picked me up at the airport hotel and we drove around the city and did some sightseeing.
We first drove over near the stadium and entertainment district area. It was early in the day and there were very few other people around so it appeared that there were no games being held that day.
After driving around the stadium area, we drove to the Italian Market and stopped and walked around.
The Italian Market was busy with activity and it contained several stores serving Italian food products, meat, vegetables, cheese as well as specialty gifts. There were also fruit stands serving fresh fruit and vegetables.
We walked through the Market and stopped at Anthony’s Coffee shop where I got an Espresso and my sister and her boyfriend had coffee and cannoli.
The espresso was rich and it had a smooth taste and flavor and was served in a glass cup. The cannoli looked good.
We continued to walk around and stopped at a Di Bruno Brothers Cheese market where we sampled a variety of cheeses. The market offered fresh and cured meats as well as a variety of cheeses. The workers in the store were friendly and polite and they were happy to share information on the various cheeses. I purchased two of the cheeses and the staff member wrapped them up neatly for travel and they thanked me sincerely when I paid for the items.
We continued to walk around the Italian Market before ending by walking by the two famous Cheesesteak restaurants. Gino’s and Pat’s. I’ve heard great things about both and they both had long lines at that time. Which one is best?
After the Italian Market, we drove over to the the University Area near the University of Pennsylvania where we stopped for lunch at Abyssinian Ethiopian Restaurant. The restaurant was in a residential neighborhood.
When we arrived only one other customer was present. The hostess greeted us and after a few minutes offered to take our orders. The three of us got sampler platters to try the various options. My sister and her boyfriend had dined at the restaurant in the past. We were seated at a regular table; however, there were also traditional tables were I had my picture taken.
The lunch was served with traditional Ethiopian bread and it consisted of five different varieties of vegetable based items. All of the food was excellent and we had a wonderful lunch.
After departing the restaurant, we drove around in a park area before stopping at an area by the water near the boat houses were located.
The boat houses are used for regattas and there were houses for all the major universities in the area. A few of the boats were in the water and it was nice to see them up close.
The park featured walking trails and as well as gazebos and other areas for photos or relaxing. There were several couples having their engagement photos taken in this area.
After walking around for a while, we returned to the car and drove to the city center where we saw some of the historic buildings including the city hall, Liberty Bell building and Independence Hall.
Due to the time constraints, we only stopped outside of the city hall to take a picture. We also drove over to the Chinatown area where they showed me the gate as well as a variety of shops.
We finished the day as it was getting dark with a drive along the water near the historic docks as well as the naval yards before they dropped me off at the airport. It was great getting to see my sister and her boyfriend as well as spending a little time exploring Philadelphia.
