Hyatt Award Chart Changing Soon

From time to time hotel chains modify their award chart either making it more or less difficult to redeem for a stay at one of their properties.

The award chart changes happen in theory to make the award redemption equivalent in value to the cash price. This is not always the case; however, sometimes it is just about supply and demand. If more people are redeeming points for a stay, the chain will typically increase the number of points required. Likewise, if fewer people are redeeming points for a stay, the chain will likely decrease the points required for an award night.

Hyatt Award Chart Changing Soon

Hyatt makes these changes on a quarterly basis generally and does so by changing the tier level of the award.

The next one will take place on August 1, 2016. What that means is properties are at the current levels through the end of July.

Hyatt Award Levels

Hyatt offers levels between 1 and 7.

An example of a level 1 property would be a Hyatt House in a small community such as the Hyatt House Mount Laurel. This property requires 5,000 points per-night.

An example of a level 7 property would be Park Hyatt Sydney. The Park Hyatt Sydney requires 30,000 points per-night.

Properties Impacted by the upcoming Award Chart Update

For the upcoming award chart update, 106 properties are impacted.

56 properties are moving to a lower level

50 properties are moving to a higher level

The fact that 56 properties are going down in level is excellent.

The other 50 make sense in that most of those properties are in markets where the nightly rates have increased.

The following list published by Hyatt and shows which properties are changing as of August 1, 2016:

I’ve stayed at a couple of these properties in the past.

Hyatt Award Chart Changing Soon

The last property listed was one that I recently reviewed: Hyatt Centric Miami. This property is going down by two levels. That is a significant decrease.

You can find my review of the property here.

I felt that the property was nice and modern and it offered an excellent breakfast. The drawback was that it did not offer ocean views. That is likely the reason for the change.

It was nice the see that none of the properties went up to level 7 for this update.

One disappointment that I noted was the Grand Hyatt DFW went up in value from 3 to 4. It is a great hotel to stay at if you have a layover in Dallas as is located within the international terminal. I’ve had a few flights that come in which have required an overnight at the airport and it was a hassle getting to the other Hyatt located near terminal C. If I had known how difficult it was, I would have stayed at the Grand because I could have gotten more sleep that night.

Did your favorite Hyatt show up on the above list?

I hate it when hotels change the award charts, but it’s a part of the lifestyle of using miles and points. This reinforces the mantra of “earn and burn”… earn the miles and use them as soon as possible!
